It seems like you get more loot if you're there for the whole battle and you get more kills. I'm pretty sure the greater amount of kills your army gets % wise compared to the armies as whole gets the larger loot distribution. But large battles happen to divide up the loot in an unsatisfying way. Roguery affects loot. Look at the production, it can be negative if the town is disloyal.
